Description
Platycerium hillii
Scientific name / local name : Platycerium hillii
Origin : Queenslands , Australia
Flower colour : Spores
Soil : epiphyte but we grow them in baskets filled with coconut husk. That way we can remove this easier with less root damage, resulting in better shipping.
sun/shade : 50% shade
watering : Keep rootball always moist.
Hardiness/ temp. ( C) : minimum 15 C
Height : They can actually grow very big, up to 2-3m but they grow rather slow.
Overall information : Platycerium are already in the plant trade for a while but this was mainly P. alcicorne and p. grandis. We now have a joint venture with a Thai nursery that can provide over 100 botanical and hybrid Platycerium. It will take some time to identify and catalogue them so please have patience.
Platycerium is actually a rather easy fern and it can even withstand dry air inside the house as long as you keep the rootball moist. I suggest u put some moist-holding organic material between the rootball and the mount . Do never remove the white ‘plush’ on the leaves . This is their natural protection against the sun. Especially the young leaves are very fragile, do not touch them. Fertilizer 3 times a year approx. 50% of the normal dose you would give plants in soil. Apply that through the water.
